Default qasas bk1 - section 2 Yusuf as - story No 9

Salams,

Looking at the analysis of the ayah in this story...
Shaykh took the verb ahmilu as the first nested sentence which becomes hal for the ya pronoun in aranee. that's ok. Hoever I'd like to understand why inni aranee is not the first nested sentence?
We started with the verb Qala and then Alakharu is Fa'il and then inni Aranee comes - so why is this not a nested sentence ?

Quoted statements are called "maqoola". They have a special name. A normal verb would have a maf'ul bihi which can either be a single word or a phrase, but not a full sentence (unless converted).

qaala verbs are different. their maqoola's can be anything, including multiple sentences and even multiple paragraphs. Just like in English.

If I chose to not give the term while analysing this sentence, that would be because we don't necessarily talk about everything. We introduce terms gradually.

So to summarise, this sentence has a special term and that is maqoola. It is not "nested" in the sense that we used that term in the "nested structures" recording (not sure, if you've heard that already).

Salams,
Yes I've heard lecture on nested structures.
I thought that you mentioned in previous recording that maful bihi cannot take a sentence - it has to be a phrase or single word.
Or can maful bihi take a ull sentence with the harfe masdar convertor?

In my mind, a nested sentence means a sentence within a sentence which is what the case is - after Qala... so why is this type of sentence excluded from nested structures discussion.

My earlier reply was probably sufficient, but no worries.

1. Generally, a maf'ul bihi can only be a single word or a phrase.

2. It can not be an entire sentences UNLESS converted into the meaning of a masdar by "an" in which case it is no longer a sentence, so number 1 is still true.

3. There are three things which can be an entire sentence and they are very widely used as such. These three are predicates, sifah and haal.

4. In order to deal with the above we made a recording and called it the nested structures file.

5. This nested structures file also included a different but very similar discussion on adverbial and prepositional phrases.

6. The qaala verb (and all of its variants, mudhari', amr etc.) is different and can NOT be incorporated in any of the above.

7. The grammar people noticed this and gave it a special name. They call it a maqoola.

8. A maqoola can be literally anything, one word, phrase, full sentence, multiple sentence, multiple paragraphs. Therefore, nothing mentioned in points 1-5 can govern the way it appears. For this reason we do not call it a nested structure. This is our terminology.
